Family photos are a great way to capture special moments and preserve the memories of those you love. But when it comes to styling the perfect family photo shoot, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are some tips for planning and executing the perfect family photo shoot:

1. The Location + Season

The first step in styling your family photo shoot is choosing a location. Think about what kind of look you’re going for - Is it an outdoor adventure in the woods? A city park with a background skyline? A beach escape? Or just use your home as the canvas. You could also consider the season that’s right for you, Autumn for the beautiful seasonal colours or Spring when the flowers start to bloom. Consider all of your options and pick a spot that feels right for your family.

2. How and where are you planning to use the photos?

This is often something that can be forgotten, but it’s actually really important to plan where you will put the photos in your home.

If you are having a family photoshoot with the intention of hanging the mounted or framed photos in your living room, then think about the colour scheme in the room. What colours would work well with your décor?

Similarly, if you are having an outdoor family session so that you can get some fun photos of the children and plan to hang the pictures in their bedroom, again, what colours would work well with the room’s colours scheme?

Complementary colours will mean that the pictures fit perfectly in the room.

3.The Outfit

Once you have chosen the location, it’s time to think about clothing. Try choosing complementary colours or patterns that bring out the vibrant personality of each family member. When picking out outfits, also think about how each piece of clothing will interact with the background; if it’s an outdoor setting, consider bringing items that match the scenery like sweaters and scarves.

Relaxed and casual clothing like jeans and a t-shirt or a floaty dress work well for in-home and outdoor family sessions. The most important thing is to be yourself and feel comfortable. Remember to accessorise. Not only to compliment your outfit but for fun too. Have the man wear a tie for the woman to hold. Necklaces for the kids to play with or hats to hide behind.

4. The Props

Adding props can help transform any ordinary image into something unique and eye-catching. These don’t necessarily have to be physical objects; they could also be things like bubbles, leaf piles or branches of trees to climb on! If you decide to use props in your family photo shoot, make sure they fit with both your wardrobe choices as well as your chosen backdrop.

5. Keep it Natural

When styling a family photo shoot, try not to get too caught up in making everyone look picture perfect - instead, focus on capturing more natural expressions. This is sometimes easier for little ones than brown ups! Encourage everyone to move around and engage with one another; this often results in unexpected laughs and candid moments which are perfect for capturing personality-filled images!

Family photos don’t have to be serious; be sure to have fun!
