5 Autumn activities for littlies
•Posted on September 04 2024
The changing seasons provide lots of sensory stimulation for little ones – whether they’re babies, pre-schoolers or older, and the arrival of autumn towards the end of this month is no exception!
If you’re ready to pack the trusty paddling pool away for another year, scroll down to explore some fantastic autumn activities for early years that’ll seamlessly take its place:
1. Leaf Crafts
I have fond memories of going on woodland walks when I was younger – and the most vivid ones involve running along footpaths enclosed by towering treetops as far as my eyes could see.
This new season is an ideal time to enjoy outdoor stomps as Mother Nature continues to do what she does best. There are so many smells for our mini mes to experience, alongside an abundance of varying-shaped autumnal leaves covering the ground.
Colourful and crunchy, fallen leaves offer never-ending, fun-filled possibilities for children; some of which The Woodland Trust shares in this blog.
2. Footprint painting in the garden
...What better way to spend an autumnal Sunday morning I say?!
Shoes and socks off and paint at the ready, this autumn activity for toddlers by Little Hearts Big Love is perfect for tiny toes and is guaranteed to provide hours of giggles, while making prints you can treasure forever. (What’s more, you’re less likely to find rouge paint splodges on your carpets or walls – win-win!)
3. Homemade playdough: an apple-scented edition
I don’t know what it is about playdough, but children are just instantly drawn to it, aren’t they?
So, as their gorgeous, inquisitive minds also love getting stuck into anything and everything, this recipe from the Rainy Day Mum hits the nail on the head.
There are many varieties of playdough on the market, however, what’s lovely about this activity is how it’s free from nasties, uses just two ingredients from the cupboards and incorporates a seasonal scent.
4. Apple flapjacks
Do you have a budding little Great British Baker in your household?
I’ve recently found a family-friendly baking and cooking blog called ‘Cooking with My Kids’ written by Helen – a mum of two, who has a passion for creating recipes littlies can turn their hands to.
Now if I’m being completely honest with you, all of Helen’s autumnal recipes caught my eye (!), however as flapjack is such a popular bake I thought her apple flapjack would be a delicious starter for ten. And for children with dairy allergies or intolerances, you can easily substitute the butter for an alternative.
5. Pumpkins, pumpkins, pumpkins
This wouldn’t be a true autumnal blog if it didn’t mention them!
From babies sitting in one with their little leggies popping out of the front, to all the amazing faces
that can be carved and lit up at nighttime, pumpkins are an autumn activity for kids that’ll never get
old.
Where is your nearest pumpkin patch? Here are 15 locations across the UK if you’d like to find yours ahead of Halloween next month. And speaking of Halloween, last year we put together these fun food platter ideas if you’re searching for even more autumnal yumminess...
